Should You Be Concerned About Eye Floaters?

Have you ever noticed tiny specks, cobwebs, or shadowy shapes drifting through your vision? These are commonly known as eye floaters, and they’re a frequent topic of concern among patients at Bright Sight Optometry. While most floaters are harmless, they can occasionally signal a more serious issue. So, when should you be concerned about eye floaters?

    What Are Eye Floaters?

Eye floaters are small, semi-transparent shapes that drift through your vision. They are caused by microscopic clumps of collagen that form within the vitreous—the gel-like substance that fills most of the eye. These clumps cast shadows on the retina, which is how you perceive them as floaters.

You may notice them more easily when looking at something bright and uniform, such as a clear sky or a white wall. While floaters can be frustrating, they are often a natural part of the aging process.

    Are Eye Floaters Normal?

Yes—most of the time. As we age, the vitreous begins to break down and shrink, causing it to separate slightly from the retina and form floaters. This is known as posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) and is common after age 50. If your floaters are stable and not accompanied by other symptoms, they’re typically not a cause for concern.

When Should You Be Concerned About Eye Floaters?

While most floaters are harmless, there are certain signs that could indicate a more serious condition—especially if they appear suddenly or worsen over time.

An easy way to remember the warning signs is with the "Four Fs":

    • Floaters – A sudden increase in floaters or a shower of new spots

    • Flashes – Seeing flashes of light in your peripheral vision

    • Falling curtain – A dark curtain or veil moving across your field of vision

    • Failing vision – Any sudden loss of vision, even if temporary

If you experience any of the Four Fs, contact an eye care professional immediately. These symptoms may point to a retinal tear or detachment, which can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly.

    Causes of Worrisome Eye Floaters

While most floaters are benign, some may result from or lead to more serious eye conditions, such as:

    • Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) – As the vitreous separates from the retina, it can cause floaters and sometimes flashes of light.

    • Retinal tear or detachment – If the vitreous tugs too hard on the retina, it can cause a tear, leading to potential detachment.

    • Vitreous hemorrhage – Bleeding into the vitreous due to trauma, diabetic retinopathy, or other issues can cause sudden floaters.

    • Uveitis – Inflammation inside the eye can cause floaters, along with redness, pain, or sensitivity to light.

What Can Be Done About Eye Floaters?

If your floaters are mild and stable, your optometrist may recommend simply monitoring them over time. In rare cases where floaters significantly interfere with vision, your optometrist may refer you to a retinal specialist to discuss procedures like vitrectomy or laser therapy.

That said, the first step is always a thorough eye exam to determine the cause and evaluate the risk.

    Conclusion: Don’t Ignore Sudden Changes

Eye floaters are often harmless and part of the natural aging process—but not always. If you experience any of the Four Fs—increased floaters, flashes of light, a falling curtain or veil, or failing vision—don’t delay. Prompt evaluation can protect your eyesight.
